A Shower Curtain That Smells Musty

When Your House Doesn't Feel Right

You close the curtain and the smell is right there, musty, a little like a wet tent. The rest of the bathroom might be acceptable. Curtains and liners hold water in their folds and then hold odor in the same place. If you only fragrance the bathroom, the next shower steams the smell back out.

Take it down. Check the label. Wash what is washable, then dry it completely before it goes back up. Air drying in a dry room or outside on a dry day is the point. A curtain returned to the rod while it is still damp will smell again by evening. If it comes out of a legitimate wash still odored, or the plastic is sticky and cracked, replace it. Some things are done.

While it is down, smell the rod, the liner if it is separate, and the tub edge. Sometimes the curtain is guilty and sometimes it was leaning on dirty caulk. Clean the hard surfaces. Let them dry. Hang the curtain spread open, not bunched. After every shower, leave it that way until it is dry. That looks less tidy and it is the whole trick.

The fan decides whether this becomes a monthly chore. Tissue test. Outdoor duct. 20 to 30 minutes after the water stops. A curtain in a room that never clears will smell even if you buy a new one on Sunday. A curtain in a room that dries can survive a normal household.

Two-layer setups trap water between the pretty curtain and the liner. Spread both. If the outer curtain is decorative and long, keep it outside the tub so it is not wicking splash. A decorative curtain that lives in the water will smell no matter what the liner does.

Do not soak the curtain in a closed bathroom with a pile of products. Wash it in a washer if the label allows, or in a place you can rinse and hang with air. Do not put a heater against plastic. Melted liner is a smell of a different kind.

If the musty note remains in the room with the curtain gone, you have a room problem that the curtain was advertising. Vanity leak, weak fan, wet mat, dry-trap drain. Hunt those with the curtain out of the way so your nose is not stuck on fabric. Put the curtain back only when the room smells like nothing.

Guests notice curtains first. You do not need to apologize with a spray before dinner. A dry liner is enough.

Write whether a full dry fixed it. If yes, the habit is the maintenance. If no, the fan or the room is next, and another liner will not educate you.

Hang the washed curtain and then ignore the urge to close it for looks. Leave it open through the afternoon and smell it before dinner. That is the test, not the first minute out of the washer when everything smells like detergent. If it is neutral then, you are finished except for the daily spread. If it is musty already, it went back up damp or the rod area was never cleaned.

If the curtain smells only when the shower is hot and the room is steamy, smell it dry an hour later. Steam releases odor that a dry curtain may not have anymore. A curtain that is neutral when fully dry can stay, as long as you do not store it in a wad. A curtain that is musty when dry and after a real wash is finished. Replace it, then protect the new one with air and a fan, not with a spray you hit on the way out the door.

If breathing is the thing that scares you, call a doctor. If the fix means wiring, gas, or tearing into structure, call a licensed pro.
