A musty smell in a new house means the place was closed up, damp, or leaking before you arrived. Air it, measure humidity, and find whether the smell rides the furnace before you fill the closets. You walked in with the keys and a pizza and the hallway smelled like a cottage that had been shut since August. The first week, before the furniture decides
Open the house for a few hours when the outdoor air is drier than the indoor air. Put a hygrometer in the bedroom and the basement. Under about 50 percent is the target. Smell the washer if it conveyed. Look in the attic hatch and the crawl if you can do it safely. Photograph anything soft or spotted.
Your inspection report may already hint at grading, a bath fan, or a stain. Read it again with your nose. About 10 square feet of growth, sewage, or HVAC insulation is not a DIY welcome project.

Common questions
Will an ozone treatment before move-in fix it?+
No. Ozone is an irritant, and it does not dry a wall. Air the house, find the water, and skip the ozone rental.
Should I delay moving in?+
If a bedroom is wet or anyone who will sleep there has asthma and the smell is strong, yes, give it a few days somewhere else while the source is found. A faint closed-house note that dies after airing and a dry humidity reading is a different, calmer story.
Can I back out of a sale over a smell?+
