Asthma worse at home

Asthma that is worse at home can be aggravated by damp air, dust in bedding, a musty vent, pets, or smoke and fragrance. It is not proof of mold, and it is not a cue to skip your clinician. Use your asthma plan for any flare. In parallel, dry the bedroom toward 50 percent humidity, find the smell, and stop covering it with scent.

Is an air purifier the treatment?
No. It can lower particles in one closed room. Leaks, damp drywall, and your prescriptions are separate jobs.
Can I seal the ducts myself this weekend?
Reachable return leaks, yes, with UL 181 foil tape or mastic, not cloth tape. Do not seal flues or combustion air. Keep a CO alarm if the equipment burns fuel.

Common questions
Does mold cause asthma?+
Damp, moldy buildings are associated with worse asthma symptoms in people who already have it, and with some new respiratory problems. That association is not a personal diagnosis. Treat the person and dry the building.
Should the whole family change inhalers because of a smell?+
No. Each person's plan belongs to their own clinician. The shared job is the air in the house.
What if I rent?+
