Black spots on walls are mold often enough to take them seriously when they cluster in a damp corner, a closet, a bathroom, or behind furniture. A single wipe on a dry, hard surface tells you if it is loose dirt. Spots that return, smear from inside the paint, or sit on a soft wall mean moisture in the material. Find that water before you paint.
You can't see most of it. A clean-looking home can still hide moisture behind the walls and in the ducts. The way through is a plan, not a scare.
Your eye keeps going back to the same corner
At first you think it is shadow, or the kids' fingerprints, or the candle you burned last winter. Then you see the cluster: little black spots on the wall by the closet, up near the ceiling in the bath, along the cold north side of the bedroom. You touch one. You wish you had not, because now you have to know.
Some spots are soot from candles or a cooking range, which wipes off and matches the rooms where you burn things. Some are dirt on a wall that never gets washed. Mold spots tend to gather where water is: cold corners, bathrooms, window walls, behind the headboard. The house will usually give you a second clue, a smell or a humidity number over about 50 percent, if you are willing to look.
A careful wipe, not a renovation
On a hard, dry, intact wall, moisten a cloth with soap and water and wipe one spot. If it comes off and the paint stays sound, clean the small area, dry it, and watch for a week. If the spot ghosts back, if the paint lifts, or if the drywall feels soft, stop. You are no longer in wipe territory. Do not sand it. Sanding turns a spot into a room.
The spots are only above the heater.
That can be dust stuck to a wall by a gentle plume of air, sometimes called ghosting. Check humidity anyway. A musty smell means you do not get to call it dust and walk away.
They are in the closet on an outside wall.
Classic condensation. Empty the closet, dry it, and get the room under about 50 percent. Soft drywall in a closet is still wet drywall.
They showed up after a leak we thought was dry.
The surface can look finished while the cavity is not. If the stain returns or the smell stays, the cavity needs to be opened by someone set up to contain it.
The whole wall is speckled past the size of a poster.

Paint is a cover, not a dry-out
Kilz over a damp spot is a short story with a bad ending. Stain-blocking primer has a job after the material is dry and clean, or after the wet paper has been cut out. If you are pregnant, if a child has asthma, or if the area is large, you do not need to be the person on the ladder with a scraper. Ask for containment and for the water to be fixed first.

Common questions
Are black spots on walls always mold?+
No. Soot, dirt, and ghosting can mimic it. The pattern, the smell, and whether it returns on a damp wall tell you more than the color alone.
Can I use bleach?+
On a hard, non-porous spot, soap and water are enough. Bleach on drywall mostly changes the color and adds fumes. Never mix it with other cleaners.
Should I test a spot with a kit?+
A tape sample mailed to a lab can name a genus and still not tell you the leak. Fix the moisture. Test if a professional needs the name for the scope of work.
