Mold behind furniture grows where a cold outside wall stays damp and air cannot move, often behind a dresser, a bed, or a sofa. Pull the piece out, photograph what you find, and dry the wall. How to look without making a cloud

If the marks are limited and the wall is hard and intact, note the size with your hand in the photo.
Left side: clean, dry, and stop parking the sofa there. Right side: contain the room, keep kids out, and get help. Porous backs of particle-board furniture that are stained and soft are often not worth saving. Solid wood that stayed dry can be cleaned and moved. Fabric that smells musty after it was against the wall needs a honest wash or the curb.

Why it comes back if you only clean
The wall is still cold and the room is still humid. Leave a few inches of air gap. Keep the room under about 50 percent relative humidity. Fix the windowsill in the same room if it weeps. If the baseboard is swollen, the water may be from outside, a gutter, or a leak, not just from breathing and showers. Cleaning is the afternoon. Common questions
Should I throw the dresser away?+
If the back panel is swollen, stained through, or smells after it has dried in the sun for a day, yes. If it is solid and only the wall was spotted, clean it and leave a gap.
Can I spray the wall and push the bed back?+
