A carpet that smells musty is storing moisture in the fibers or the pad, often from a spill, a pet spot, a concrete slab, or a leak at the wall. Common questions
Will baking soda save a musty carpet?+
It can dull a light odor in dry yarn. It will not dry a pad. If you lift the corner and regret it, skip the powder.
Can we stay in the room while the pad comes out?+
If the area is small and dry, often yes, with the door closed and the HVAC off so you do not share the dust. If the pad is moldy across the room, sleep elsewhere until it is out and the subfloor is dry. Anyone with asthma should not be in the dust.
What about area rugs?+
Take them outside, beat what you can, and wash if the label allows a full dry. A rug that stayed on a wet floor and still smells after drying belongs in the trash.
